SEO Doesn’t Mean Sell Out

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a term that is thrown around a lot in the world of web site marketing but it is a term that carries quite a bit of weight. SEO refers to the optimization of a web site to attract the attention of the search engines. But it’s actually much more than that. The truth is that SEO that is not done correctly can have exactly the opposite effect than intended, and worse still, improper SEO can actually serve to irritate the very audience you are hoping to attract.

The mainstay of search engine optimization is the inclusion of keyword rich content that serves to nudge the attention of the search engines. The keywords chosen are vitally important in this regard as they should be the keywords that search engine users may use when looking for the information, goods, and services provided by your website. Choosing generic keywords means you are up against some stiff competition; choosing specific keywords is important and helps the web site to gain leverage.

The content that contains these keywords is equally important. Web site owners may think that in order to reach targeted web site traffic through the search engines they must use their chosen keywords as often as possible throughout their content. This may work to their disadvantage however; search engines being the savvy entities that they are. Using keywords repetitively – to the detriment of the quality of the content – will trigger the search engines to dismiss the site altogether.

Truly successful SEO content that is able to effective increase web site traffic is also able to inform and entertain visitors once they reach the site. By keeping in mind that this content must effectively strike a balance between search engines and web site visitors, web sites will be able to reach their SEO goals.
